About Us
At Spectral Ecology, we exist to bridge the gap between high-level academic research and real-world environmental management. We recognized a frustrating lag between groundbreaking scientific discoveries and their practical application in industry—a delay that hinders efforts to protect our natural and built environments.
To solve this, we founded Spectral Ecology to bring cutting-edge spatial modeling, multi-sensor UAV mapping, and advanced ecological science out of the lab and into the field. Our ethos is simple: to make world-class, data-driven scientific tools accessible and cost-effective for all, without ever compromising on academic rigor. We are innovators, dedicated to providing the deep insights needed to manage, protect, and restore our ecosystems for future generations.
Dr. Tom Fairchild Tom brings over a decade of pioneering ecological research to Spectral Ecology. A leading figure in multi-million-pound research projects, he has contributed to national environmental policies and published widely in prestigious scientific journals. His core expertise lies in developing state-of-the-art UAV multi-modelling frameworks that map species and ecosystem services—like flood resilience and nutrient regulation—at unprecedented scales. Tom is also an accomplished technical photographer and videographer.

Joshua Mutter Josh is a remote sensing expert and aquatic taxonomist with eight years of dedicated research experience. Holding a Master’s Degree in Ecological Remote Sensing, Josh has played pivotal roles in high-profile academic projects including Ecostructure and BEF-Scale. He specializes in designing and deploying advanced machine learning models for the image segmentation and classification of plant and algal species. Josh’s deep knowledge of marine and freshwater taxonomy ensures our models are always grounded in biological reality.
